Half a kilometre away from Varese Lígure, set upon a hill, lies an extraordinary azienda agricola, called "La Cibele", an "agriturismo".
On twelve hectares of land, amid acorn, oak and ash trees, graze animal populations that change over the years - since 2007, it has been white donkeys.
Braving the steep curves up the hill is rewarded with a spectacular view of the Vara valley and onto the Varese.
The renovation of the property has been finished, with due respect for the traditional building structures, but simultaneously introducing artistic ideas. An antique gargoyle compliments a fountain, sculptures decorate the place, there are many well-thought-out details.
The age-old buildings are arranged around a panoramic terrace containing a small but lovely pool and a pergola. There is enough space to relax and eat, a wood-fired oven and a barbecue can be used to prepare meals.
The easily accessible hiking trails follow old connections; by foot, on mountain bikes or even on horseback, a piece of local history can thus be explored (bikes can be rented in Varese).
Distance to the coast: about one half hour by car, 35 kilometres to Lévanto (with sand/gravel beaches) on an easily manageable road. The cinqueterre are best accessed from there, either by train or by boat; closer, but more curvy, is the way to Sestri Levante or Riva Trigoso (sand beaches).
Out onto the sea:: day trips on a 9 metre sailing boat (with the owner as skipper) can be arranged from Fezzano in the bay of La Spezia to Portovenere and further into the cinqueterre. Up to four persons, at very reasonable prices.
Appartement B for 2 + 2 persons, app. 50 m2,
A few stairs above the pool area, with kitchen, living area with sleeping sofa; behind a Spanish wall, the sleeping area with double bed and bathroom.
Appartement C for 2 + possibly 1 persons, app. 28 m2,
is a well-structured one-room apartment with full-length barrel vault ceiling. It consists of a vestibule with kitchenette and a chimney corner, the couch there can be pulled out for sleeping. Behind, a separate sleeping area with double bed, bathroom. The pool is accessed via a short flight of stairs.
Appartement D und E for 4 persons, app. 45 m2,
The old barn is now (2005) renovated. On the ground floor, two pretty holiday apartments have been completed, each with living room/kitchenette, two small bedrooms, bathroom and a terrace to the front, facing the valley. Apartment D has its exit on the pool side, Apartment E features a bedroom with bunk beds.
