> Torre Bonazza >
The Torre Bonazza is an old guard tower from the times when the Saracens, moorish sailors and pirates, infested the Christian Mediterranean coasts for centuries and intruded far into the Ligurian hinterland for prey pillage and slaves. Up until the 18th century, the "barbaresques", pirates of the north African coast, came to raid here.
The tower dates back to the 15th century, perhaps even earlier. As part of the former defense system, it is located at the mouth of the river Prino directly at the beach line. Only in the 18th century, a building for residential purposes was added.
A few years ago, the upper part of the tower was restructured by the new, young owners, making room for a modern apartment; it sleeps three persons (a regular bed, a sofa bed for one). On the roof, there is a panoramic terrace - where one resides in splendid sovereignty above the sometimes quite lively coastal strip which features restaurants, etc., and on midsummer evenings an animated Mediterranean life.
The wide view stretches from Porto Maurizio and the nearby Borgo Prino, onto the open sea and the promontory in the west, and onto the small seaside resort of San Lorenzo al mare.
Landward (still) runs the coastal railway (one track only), the trains travel slowly, however, and behind the coastal road.
Borgo Prino and downtown Porto Maurizio, as well as a bakery, supermarket, and the spiaggia d'oro can all be reached by a short walk; a reserved parking space on the fenced-in property belongs to the apartment, as does a facility for (small) boats.
Washing machine, central heating, small pets upon inquiry.
