Alassio, "Arasce", is one of the most prestigious resorts of the western Riviera, with a long sandy beach, at the intersection between the so-called Riviera of the palms and the Riviera of the flowers.
The fate of this city goes back to the times of mass migrations. Legendary memories of the Saracen raids have left their mark in the local fairy tales, while commercial success under the hegemony of Genoa in the 16th century brought prosperity.
At the end of the 19th century, tourism began to develop here, which was then Anglo-Saxon dominated, as it was in the rest of the Riviera and the Côte d'Azur. In the sixties of the last century, Germans longing for the Mediterranean increasingly became present in the region.
While these developments have left their marks, the city has developed without dramatic architectural changes, and has remained a very lively center with a great name in Italy.
"Il muretto", "the wall", reminds prominent visitors, with reminiscences of Zarah Leander, Louis Armstrong and many others. You can stroll freely among coffee bars, ice cream parlors, shops, and the beach.
Farther west lays atmospheric Laigueglia, where fishermen still earn their living: smaller and more familiar than Alassio, good beach.
